Honors Blog 4

Honors: A Personal History
Please complete all of the following:
1. Discuss your successes as an honors student this past semester.
As a honors student it has improved my writing skills significantly. By doing the extra articles and essays and also having harder expectations has improved my writing in humanities and also in other classrooms as well. It has also helped me keep me busy and working efficiently to make sure I keep up with due dates. It also helped me work harder than I usually did because I wanted my end result to be a good a good grade.

2. Discuss what you might have done differently if you do this past semester of honors over again.
I would most likely just make sure I have the books/ novels I need for my essays in advance so I can began reading them as soon as i can to give me more time for actually writing part of my essays. I would also get my essays critiqued before I turn them in for a final draft because that seemed to be my biggest problem, small minor mistakes that could have been fixed.

3. Discuss your goals for honors in the second semester.
Next semester in honors I would like to get through alot of my work earlier than when it is actually due because alot of the work and assignment this year were the same as or very close to the regular assignment due dates in his regular class, So it was easy to fall behind on some of the assignments if I didn't have them complete or half way done.

4. If you could choose any parts of literature and history for our honors work, what would you pick and why?
I really like to learn about World War I and II because three's alot of important things that went on during these periods that are always over looked. I would also like to learn more about the roaming twenties because it was a interesting time period but we only went briefly into it, not so much as in dept as I would have liked. Another period that seems pretty interesting to learn about is The Civil rights movement and the different laws that were changed during that time period and what makes them significant.

Into thin Air

Jasmine Jackson

Passion, loyalty, self motivation and strength are all emotional and mental qualities one would need to successfully climb Mount Everest, however, some of these qualities can possibly lead to disaster. Passion leads to making unwise decisions while loyalty can prevent you from making good personal decisions, putting forth strength and self-motivation for success.

Passion is a very important mental and emotional quality to have when climbing up Mount Everest, without passion about what you are doing it would be hard for you to overcome road bumps in the trip. Even though passion is something that one would need to successfully climb Mount Everest it could also be the thing that leads you to Disaster.
Andy Harris was a guide on the Mount Everest trip.

He is seen to be very passionate about his climbing and about his job. The book says that he couldn’t resist climbing up the mountain, When other guides couldn’t guide up the hill he volunteers his service. Andy’s passion is somewhat one of the things that have leaded him to successfully climb previous mountains before; it was also the one thing that could have leaded him to disaster, and death. In the book Andy falls off the mountain and dies. I feel that his passion lead him to make an unwise and unsafe design as to climbing the dangerous side of the mountain leading him to fall off and die.

Rob hall was one of the tour guides that lead the group up Mount Everest. In the book rob s portrayed as a respectable passionate and loyal guide. Many parts of the book have showed theses qualities are what have helped him successful lead others up the mountain before. Although the have helped him previously his loyalty begins to lead him to disaster. Rob and client Doug Hansen got stuck on the top of Mount Everest. Doug begins to run out of oxygen and Rob refuses to leave him there.

On there way down the mountain they both run out of oxygen, Doug dies from lack of oxygen, and Rob slips into unconsciousness and eventually dies. Rob would have made it down the mountain alive if he would have left his client but because of his loyalty he was prevented from making a good personal decision that would have lead him to success rather than disaster.

Beck Weathers was a client who paid to climb up Mount Everest. He was a doctor who had recently fallen in love with climbing. Beck displays strength, bravery, self motivation and determination through out the book. After becks teammates leave him for death, he gains enough strength to try and make it down the mountain he finds another group and camps the night with them. Weathers loose his sleeping bags and gets frost bite on his cheeks and nose.

Because of Becks strength and self motivation he never gave up hope and successfully made it to the bottom of the mountain where doctors told him he had the worst case of frost bite they have seen. Weathers is seen to have passion about climbing and also seemed to be somewhat loyal but when it came down to it he had self motivation which helped him to success.

In the beginning pages of the book the author explains that it is important for you to trust the people that you are climbing the mountain with. But in the book it also shows that if you don’t look after yourself than you will be the one who lead to disaster rather than success is. The characters in the book that died were the ones who looked after others and were very loyal and unselfishness towards the team was the ones who were lead downhill.

Andy and Rob were more loyal to his clients rather than themselves. They were also passionate about there job as guides which lead them to make unwise decisions. Beck weathers was passionate about climbing but his passion was over powered by strength and self motivation for success. Passion and Loyalty are two important emotional and mental qualities that are important for one to have when climbing Mount Everest, but without self motivation and strength then they can lead you to disaster.

The Great Gatsby Essay

The Great Gatsby can be interpreted the criticism of the “American dream”. In this criticism, F. Scott uses a character to retell events to help explain the American dream to come with many rewards, yet consequences, and the lost of morals.

There were a few main characters that took part into the criticism of the American dream. Nick Caraway a young man from Minnesota Yale educated, and a war veteran in World War I. He goes to New York City to learn the bond business. Nick is a Honest, tolerant guy he also is inclined to reserve judgment, Nick can be seen as a confidant friend some one you can trust to tell your secrets to. In the book nick becomes best friends with title character Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in West Egg who throws large parties every Saturday night.

Gatsby was formally known as James Gatz who worked for a millionaire to achieve wealth. Gatsby meets Daisy in Louisville and fell in love with her. Daisy is a young woman who promised to wait for Jay Gatsby after they were aparted in war.Daisy ends up falling in love with a wealthy, and powerful man named Tom Buchanan. Tom was once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale. Tom can be over baring, sexist, racism and stubby. He also is presented to have Little to no morals at all. Tom has a mistress name Myrtle. Myrtle Wilson lives in the valley of ashes with husband George Wilson owner of a run down garage.

Daisy and Tom Buchanan have many of the rewards to living the American Dream. “there lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile jumping over sun dials and brick walks and burning gardens. This was said by nick in chapter one when explaining the Buchanan's. They had a beautiful house, right off the bay. With french windows and bright vines . “he brought down a string of polo ponies from lake forest”. This is showing many of the rewards and perks that there are when you live the “American dream”. Having riches such as Daisy and Tom Buchanan did, you are able to buy the the things you desire.

Al through material things are one of the rewards that you can get when you live the American dream. There are many consequences that come also. Gatsby was also a man who st rived for and lived the American dream. The material things that accompanied Gatsby by living the “American Dream” was not enough to win back Daisy. When Daisy found out that Gatsby got to where he was by being a bootlegger she began to loose interest in him. In the book it says that Gatsby became a bootlegger too keep up with Daisy’s fast paste life style. He wanted to be able to provide Daisy with the “American Dream”. At the end of the book Gatsby was shot when he was caught up in the drama that between Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle and George Wilson. This seems like one of the consequences of living the American dream lifestyle. You get caught up in things that you shouldn't’t and you have to deal with the consequences.

The characters in this novel substitute there morals with money and material things. Gatsby uses his wealth and material things to win over Daisy rather than the normal Love and happiness that most people with morals would turn to. F Scott shows the reader that Love cannot be bought, no matter how much money was spent. In the book Tom and Daisy were married for quite some years and even had a child, but they both cheated, Tom with Myrtle and Daisy with Gatsby.

Tom and Daisy both tried to find happiness with their lovers, but was scared of the risk of changing their lifestyles and came to a decision that it was not worth it, they thrown away there morals to search for happiness. They were not happy with their spouses but could not find happiness with their lovers. Happiness cannot be found or bought this was shown through Gatsby trying to win Daisy back. Tom and Daisy’s lost of morals begins to make them question others. Daisy begins to loose her love and respect for Gatsby when she found out he was a bootlegger. Tom was angry at daisy’s affair with Gatsby when him his self was committing the same crime. This was all corrupted by the fast paste of the American dream causing them to loose there morals.

Then:
1. Summarize the event.
California Seeks New Limits on Boat Pollution
The article was about California regulators asking for stricter rules on the pollution standards to limit emissions from personal watercraft and motorboats.

2. What is the most important info presented in the story?
That there are people out trying to fight for change with our watercraft. Another things is how hard it is to get our world to change something they've come accustomed to and also comfortable with.

3. What info is missing?
Nothing really but more follow up on what exactly there doing to press the issue farther.

4. How does this info play into your MSB work?
Since my essential question is what can we do to reduce it, the article helps me explain one way that we can. By getting the public and California leaders to understand how important this thing is to fix.

Excerpt:
"Air-quality regulators in California have proposed rules that are tougher than Federal pollution standards to limit emissions from personal watercraft and motorboats.
The rules proposed by the state's Air Resources Board would force manufacturers to make cleaner engines for personal watercraft, like Jet Skis, and motorboats.
Bill Rush, a spokesman for Californians United to Save Boating, which represents recreational boat owners, criticized the proposed regulations, saying they would make boat engines too expensive and hurt the state's $11 billion boating and related industries. About 500,000 motorboats with outboard engines and personal watercraft ply the state's lakes and rivers."

The 1920’s or better known as the “Roaring 20’s” ushered many new changes for Wall Street, immigration, new forms of music and technology.
After World War 1 Germany couldn't’t afford to pay its war debts so the United States became intertwined with Europe. Wall Street began to invest into European debts to keep the US economy together because of the large percentage of costumers marketing of American mass production goods.
Around the 1930’s the US began to share stocks with Germany, Brittan, France, and Canada, making a positive significant change to the United States stock market.

Immigration laws were also a significant change that took place during the 1920’s. The American Immigration Act of 1924" Immigration Act of 1924 was passed stopping immigration from countries where 2% of the total population per the 1890 of that countries population that were immigrants from another country.

This however did not include African Americans. Many Asians and Indians were stopped from immigrating altogether by the Alien Land Laws, California Webb-Haney Act in 1913 that prevented them from ineligible for citizenship or the right to own land in California. , This laws did not affect Filipinos, who were subjects of U.S. there were many other laws to keep the united states from being overpopulated by immigrants. Another law that was passed was the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923which stopped almost all immigration from Asia into the united states.

Jazz became the most popular music listen to during the 1920’s, the new genre somewhat connected blacks, whites the rich and the poor. The new genre was being played everywhere from clubs to street corners and radio stations throughout the country. Jazz was started in New Orleans, but was called "basement" music; it then spread and began to a take United States by storm. The 1920-1929 was known as the Jazz age.

During the roaring twenties parties was one of the more popular events that took place during the 1920’s. Jazz was the main genre that was being played at these parties live bands and musicians would come out and play. It was also a time where the rich could show off there riches let loose and have a good time. At this time alcohol was banned from owning or consuming many people become angry at the law and began to rebel against the government importing alcohol into the country and throwing parties where men and women could go and drink freely.

The alcohol was smuggled into America by people named bootleggers. They consumed their alcohol from places such as Mexico, Canada, and the West Indies. There was also substitute alcohol made from wood alcohol or medical supplies which was dangerous if taken too much of. Many people used bootlegging as a advantage business where they could become very rich.

Complete the following for the MSB Organization that you are in charge of and one other that interests you:
1. Name of organization:
Surf Rider.

2. Mission statement (copy/paste from their site).
Pick two of the following:
"The core activities and campaigns that the Surfrider Foundation uses to protect our oceans, waves and beaches fall into the categories of Clean Water, Beach Access, Beach Preservation and Protecting Special Places"

3b. An important interaction with a state government agency.
California State Assembly prevented an attempt to override the State Land Commission’s denial of the Tranquillon Oil & Gas Project off the coast of Santa Barbara. They stopped legislation added to the budget that would have allowed the project to move forward. The Assembly’s decision stresses the importance of California’s system of independent boards and commissions to take action, and also highlights the grassroots efforts of the Surfrider Foundation and other environmental organizations to prevent Governor Schwarzenegger from circumventing the State Lands Commission’s decision making process regarding the project.

3c. An important interaction with a federal government agency.
Winning a lawsuit against Chevron Oil Company in El Segundo, California that represents the first time a government agency, department or office at any government level, has recognized the significance of a breaking wave as a natural resource deserving of protection

These interactions might be through court cases or law suits, funding sources, hearings, regulatory agencies (like the EPA) and so on. Please be as specific as possible. For each of the above, include relevant links to agencies, further research, news stories, etc.
Make sure you do this whole thing twice—once for your org and once for any other that interests you.

Great Gatsby: Blog 21

Gatsby and Nick are both somewhat detached from their surroundings. Compare and contrast this sense of detachment. How are they similar and/or different in this respect?

In the first few chapters we get to know nick as this non judgemental, honesty mid-west guy. He doesn't drink and he wants to get into the world of trading and buying bonds.
But throughout the first four chapters he is set in theses different settings that somewhat detaches him from his familiar surroundings. A few a examples are the Buchanan's house, it was huge and fancy and mind blowing to him because it was something he wasn't use to. Then it was Tom and Myrtle's apartment where they had the party and there drinking and smoking, and the Party at Gatsby's wheres there is drinking dancing, swimming. Nick drinks to fit in and try not to be so detached from his surroundings or at least let people see it.

Gatsby seems to be having the same problem. He throws theses huge party's every week, where there's drinking and mingling and dancing and all of the above. But he never participates in the action instead he sits back and watches. Approving his guest and turnout of the party. When Gatsby talks about his past on the way to the lunch in with Nick he describes a past that doesn't seem to connect with what is going on in his future. So maybe he has went through the same process that Nick is going through but got caught up deep in the middle of it, and is now something different from what he started as.

Now that you have finished Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby, respond to the following questions:
1. Who is the narrator? Describe his perspective, biases, character traits, etc.

The narrator is Nick Caraway. His perspective of things are really descriptive, and observant. He has some money but not as much as others in new york. Nick is from the the mid west and went to college at Yale.He fought in the great war, and wants to be a bonds seller. When he describes someone he makes sure to give great detail as to there personality and describe as to what they look like. He also gives you background information so you can make your own opinion about the character. He also makes sure that the reader understands that he is not a judgemental person so that you can trust him as he tells the story.

2. What do you think F. Scott Fiitzgerald accomplishes by chooses this specific narrator versus another choice, such as a different character or 3rd person?

I think that Scott Fiitzgerald chose to have another character tell us the story that way we can get a outsiders point of view. I also think that using another character to tell the story feels more as if i was there when everything is happening. It also seem easier for the story not to be byis if someone else is telling the story.

Blog19.

Post your inspiring professional example (put the actual work here, if you can. Try not to make us go look for it elsewhere, so for example, if you have a video, embed it).

1. What is the most successful element of this work sample? Why do you believe this?
The most successful element of this video is the translations and scene shots. This seems like the most successful because its what made the video stand out to me rather than other videos that I saw. The smooth and unique transitions also make it look very professional.

2. What is the message of the work? How do you know?
The message of the video was there was a new season of True Blood coming soon, and its going to have to do with all of the characters that were in the video. I also know what the characters would be feeling or experiencing throughout the next season because of there faces and reactions throughout the video. I know this because it says it at the end of the video.

3. Who or what is the intended audience for this work? How do you know?
For people who enjoy television, younger but mature audience. We know this because of how the actors were acting in the video and also the music that they were playing.

4. How do specific elements of the work sample come together to deliver the message?
The different angles that the creator used came together with the music and sound affects perfectly so we got a good listen or mixture as to what was going on.

5. Describe one technique the creator of this work used. Why do you think this technique was used for this specific piece of work?
The technique I think they used for this was background music. Throughout the video there is music going on and there are also sound effects happening. none of the characters talk through out the video so you pick up on there emotions through the different angling and facial expressions. This was good because it captures your audience leaving them wanting to know more.

6. Why did you choose this work sample?
Because it seemed very professional, and a good piece of work to take different techniques from. It was also very interesting and appeasing to me, and that's what I want my video to come out like.

Honors Novel

Huckleberry fin is a novel about a young boy name Huck who was adopted by a woman name widow Douglas and Miss Watson. Huck’s real father re-appears demanding custody of him. Pap Huck’s real father kidnaps his son locks him in a cabin and excessively beats him every night he gets drunk. Fed up with the beatings and scared for his life Huck fakes his death and runs away from his father.
Huck shows uncivilized free and wild thinking by expressing courage sincerity and the ability to do the right thing.

In the beginning of the book Huck needed a way out of his father’s drunken rage. So he fakes his death, spreading pig blood from which he had slaughtered himself throughout the cabin. He ran away to Jackson’s Island in the middle of the Mississippi river where he waited a few days while the town’s people looked through out the river for his body. This shows Huck’s courage and strength by using uncivilized free and wild thinking.

“We catched fish and talked, and we took a swim now and then to keep off sleepiness. It was kind of solemn, drifting down the big, still river, laying on our backs looking up at the stars,”
While on Jackson island Huck runs into miss Watson’s slave who has ran away to avoid being sold into another plantation far away from his family where the living conditions would have been unbearable. Huck and Jim become a team and look out for one another. Huck knows the consequences for helping a runaway slave but because of his sincerity and uncivilized free and wild thinking Huck doesn’t allow society stop him from doing what is right.

“What's the use you learning to do right, when it's troublesome to do right and ain't no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same” Huck and Jim rescue two men from armed Bandits, later learning they were two con artists. The two men pretended to be the brothers of a man name peter to collect his inheritance money after hearing stories about Peter’s death. Huck interferes by stealing Peters gold from the men and stashing it in peters coffin and exposing the two men to Peter oldest sister. This is a good example of Huck’s ability to do the right thing by using his uncivilized free and wild thinking.

These are three examples that show Huck’s courage sincerity and ability to do the right thing throughout the book. The events taken place through out Huckleberry Fin would not have been successful if Huck didn't use uncivilized thinking such as faking his death, Wild thinking by stealing the gold from the two cons men and doing the right thing by helping the black slave Jim, he would have never accomplished the message to do whats right rather than what society tells you to do would.

What lessons did you learn from the Industrialization Newspaper that you carry forward into the MSB project?
Cratique is something that i would take most from this project when going over some of the errors in class they were simple things that another draft or maybe another crituque could have easily fixed. This shows me that i need to step it up on my crutiquing process maybe good one more draft or multiple people to correct my draft before turning in a final. Also helping others when crituquing making sure i give them the best feedback to my ability.

Write a reflective piece in which you identify specific things, content, skills, or habits that you will address in MSB as a response to your experience with the newspaper project.

Since doing the newspaper project the main thing i learned that i can take on to my msb project is to be independt even when working on a group project. That anytime i am giving a assignement rather it be group work or team work that i need to apply myself effiecently and work my hardest.I also learned how to use my recourse during this project, My part aside from doing my artcile was to make the map. I didnt understand fully how to make that particular map so i asked my classmate to help me, that wasnt his part of the project and he did have to stop his part and help me but i learned that if you ask in a respectable and time consuming way than your classmates can help you.

Blog #17: MSB people, groups & orgs!

Think Blue:
This is a pollution prevention program that has meetings throughout the year that discuss different problems in San Diego county and how they can reduce the percentage of pollution happening.
it would be a good add in if i interviewed maybe a representative from the program that can explain a little more in detail what they do in there program how its helping San Diego's water quality, and ways that people that are now aware can get involved.

Coast keeper:
This is a organization that does water quality test and maintaining, the also organize groups to get them aware our water pollution and the things that are causing them it also gives suggestions as to how we can reduce the pollution.
Interviewing them is something that could be time efficient and good to add into my video. Coast keeper is familiar with this particular project so it would be easy to get the interview quick and informational.

Reducing Marine Engine Pollution:
This organization is tied into exactly what my project is based on, they do a lot of testing as to what jet ski's and motorboats add to our water pollution. They have test and facts and other things representing the pollution in a clear and informational way.
This would be good because i can base some of my research and facts and statistics off of this organization because they are actually doing this in the field.

Honors Article 2

Is William McKinley fit to be president?
Jasmine Jackson

“The people of this country mean to maintain the financial honor of the country as sacredly as they maintain the honor of the flag.”

Candidate McKinley is unfit to rule our country because of bad judgment, poor calls and unawareness. McKinley believes that he can crush labor strikes by law if possible and by force if necessary. McKinley was one of the last veteran’s left standing during the American Civil war, which should be a clear showcase on his opinion on war and slavery.

The McKinley tariff was recently signed setting the average rate for imports to the United States a 48.4% which protected manufacturers. Bringing a new trouble to local farmers who are forced to buy high priced protected products from America making farmers have to sell our own products into a highly unprotected world of markets. Because of the McKinley tariff was another contribution to our country’s economy problem that looks more than challenging to get out of.

Since the McKinley tariff we have had major strikes and violent rages due to the depression of our economy. Workers began to rebel against label conditions. In 1893 during the panic attack we began to blame the effects on the silver purchase act. But is it safe to blame one hundred percent on? Some may question William McKinley’s thoughts on the strikes.

Republicans such as McKinley and others like him seems to have a routine way of solving reoccurring problems which include scapegoats and war. McKinley is also using massive amounts of money on his campaign. “This year is going to be a year of patriotism and devotion to country.”

“I am glad to know that the people in every part of the country mean to be devoted to one flag, the glorious Stars and Stripes.” McKinley believes in, enslavement supporting the enslavement of blacks in the south. He also supported the US soldiers attacking at Wounded Knee killing over 300 men, women, and children, to collect there land for US goods. He is willing to destroy other countries for the well being of our own. Is if fair for another country to suffer because of US problems within its self?

Another problem we must look at is the coal strike of the Midwest and mid Atlantic.
Following by the nation wide railroad strike shutting down our nation’s transportation system west of Detroit for two weeks.

Last year the gold reserve of the United States was depleted, leaving 26 New York City banks with $129 million in gold. A group of bankers lead by J. P. Morgan & Company, August Belmont & Company, the National City Bank, and others offered to exchange gold with the government for bonds, President Grover Cleveland agreed, the bankers immediately began to resale bonds at a higher price making a $18 million profit.
McKinley supported President Grover and many of the choices that he made, including this particular one of them. This leads me to continue that McKinley does not make the best calls in order to help the economy of our country.

From Janae's Scrapbook idea blog post, I realized that you can pick something different and sort of outside the box in to do your media save the beach project.I originally planed to do a video for my how do jet ski's effect the water quality project, but the scrapbook idea seems like something fun excited and would be a good idea to look more into. From taking a look at Janae's ideas it has helped me make my ideas more creative and sort of my own, I want to make my video stand out from the rest by making it unique but educational.
(http://rcjanaenoland.blogspot.com/) Link to Janae's blog.

From Corey's Website idea, I realized that I can also do a website. He used last years website of media saves the beach and used it as a example. I thought this was smart because they already did the same project so it would be a good idea to refer back to some of the ideas already thrown out there last year. what I took from Corey's idea was that for my project maybe I can incorporate more than one idea into my video and make it more eye pleasing and fun to look at. What I mean by that is I can make a video and showcase it by a cool flash website.
(http://coreymurillo.blogspot.com/) Link to Corey's blog.

From Nikita's Art Piece idea I realized that I can do something artistic that would be fun to do, creative and could come out a real sucess. My jet ski/motorboat idea would be something that could be a real success if it is voiced and presented good. I like the artistic idea for it because its something that could catch the audiences eye if it turns out good.

Post two different ideas of final products that you might be interested in making. For each one, do the following:

1. Write a sentence describing the final product (such as, "A documentary video that addresses the question....")

I would like to make a documentary video that addresses the question How do motorboats/ jet skis effect San Diego's water quality?

2. Post an example of a professional or other high-level product that could serve as a basis for your work.

3. List three specific ideas that you can take from your example to lead you to a high quality product. Write specifically how you will apply these ideas to your work here. Be as clear, exact & specific as you can!

-I liked how in the first video it had a specific time line showing how Mercedes Benz improved over time. I would take this idea and put it towards my jet ski/motorboat video and show how it got worse over time.

-What I liked about the 2nd video is how it told a story without words, and how he filmed the wildlife. I could most definitly use this for my project when showing how the water quality effects the wildlife.

-The 3rd video was straight video no words. I liked this for my project because it seems like it would come out more powerful if my video had limited words and a lot of videos and pictures so the audience themselves can witness whats going on as if they were there themselves.I also like how the music set the theme for how you should be feeling.

Blog 14

Narrow your potential MSB questions down to one that might work for you. Then, do the following:

1. Post the main question.
How do motorboats/ jet skis effect water quality?

2. Post at least three sub questions that relate to the main question, help you answer it, might generate interesting research or resources, address part of the issue, could help you if you get stuck, etc.

-What can we do to reduce the effects?
-Why is it important to reduce the effects?
-Are there possible solutions we can create to stop there effects on water quality?

3. Post at least three potentially useful resources. These could be news stories, videos, photography, etc.
-http://bordersewagecoalition.blogspot.com/
-http://www.greenecoservices.com/get-with-blue-oceans-seas-and-marine-life/

4. Write a few sentences or make a list of ideas that you got from your resources that could help move your project forward. How can you apply this information? How might it work for you?
- The last resourced listed is a Eco friendly organization that helps with jet ski' and boat pollution."promotes policy changes in government and industry to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and eradicate other root causes of air and water pollution, global warming, and habitat destruction. Also leads campaigns to protect National Parks from jetskis, snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles, and to prevent environmental damage from pollution caused by ferries, cruise ships, and other large vessels." This can help move my project along by interviewing some of the people invoked with the hands on testing and who see what they are doing to our water quality personally.

3. Then explain a current issue that involves the development you chose—what's going on now and why should we know about it?
A lot of busniess and buildings are being built around this same building. Since the Gateway park has been put up over 4 buildings have been built around it killing off more of our natural resources and contributing to pollution by company buildings.

4. Post an excerpt from—and link to—a relevant story, photo essay, video, podcast, news clip or similar media that expands our knowledge of the development or area you chose.

Ten years ago we didn't have to worry about driving in heavy traffic during rush hours. We could just cruise on down to wherever we wanted to go with no hassles. Now it's like you are in a quagmire. During rush hour, there is bumper to bumper traffic for miles, and you just inch along at a snail's pace to your destination. This traffic problem is mainly caused by the constant building of new residential areas in San Diego. In fact, San Diego County is one of the most pro-development counties in the nation. San Diego used to be filled with rolling hills, mountains, and coastlines, but now many of our hills are blasted into a flatter area of land with skeletons of homes being built upon them. All of these new people and their cars that are moving in are a major factor in our air pollution problem. Now, on some mornings, you will wake up to a bright and sunny day and look out towards the horizon and see a brown haze blanketing the sky. What happened?

The more and more cars that come to San Diego means the more and more houses and more importantly jobs San Diego has to supply. For people to have jobs they have to work in buildings and industries, which need land to be built on. By building these structures not only do we destroy different ecosystems but these buildings give off pollution as well, adding to our ever rising pollution problem.

We will share these at the start class on Tuesday.

Blog #12: Industrialization and Coastal Environments
Post and excerpt from a recent news story about issues stemming from industrialization and our local coastal environment. Then, answer the following questions:

Organic mulches also improve the condition of the soil. As these mulches slowly decompose, they provide organic matter which helps keep the soil loose. This improves root growth, increases the infiltration of water, and also improves the water-holding capacity of the soil. Organic matter is a source of plant nutrients and provides an ideal environment for earthworms and other beneficial soil organisms.

1. What is the issue, controversy or event in the story? What are the basic facts?
There telling you a way to have a healthily garden but also have a Eco friendly garden. A lot of the fertilizer that we put in our water gets washed into the oceans by rain/ water shed.

2. What information is missing from the story?
There's nothing really missing, i think they could have added more detail into why it is important to do your garden this way rather than the other, to make the reader more engaged and willing to change over.

3. What would be your next steps if you were creating a follow up to this story?
By finding different things other than garden organist but also the fertilizer that we use to help our grass grow.I would find a way to make the grass grow just as well as the fertilizer but organically.

Media Saves the Beach.

List at least three questions that interest you for Media Saves the Beach! For each question, provide a little context, so we know where your thoughts are headed, why you thought of it, what you might do to answer it, etc.

1.Does sewage spills effect water life?

2.How do motorboats/ jet skis effect water quality?

3.What does water testing do to lower water pollution?

These were the main three questions that stuck with me the most. The first one came to me because I know after a while the water life begin to adapt to the different bacteria's and if there is constant water spillage then after a while would it stop effecting them?
The motorboat and jet ski one, because there are tons of jet ski's and water toys on the beaches and waters daily, I personally ride them and own two so I would like to know there contribution to water pollution.
The last question is something that is just a general question. how do we do something about the results of the water from testing them?

Honors Novel Essay 1.

Jasmine Jackson
Push
Push is a novel written in 1996 about a 16 year old African American girl, faced with many ethnic, cultural, and troublesome obstacles that make her question her identity in society, but also help her find who she was destine to be.Throughout this novel the overall message as a whole is to overcome your worst problems, and make them your best, you have the option of choosing your identity in society.

“I have been out of the picture so long I am used to it, but that don’t’ mean that it don’t hurt. Sometimes I pass by store window and somebody fat dark skin old looking, someone looking like my muver looks back at me.” Precious Jones, grew up in the harsh streets of Harlem. Precious was a born to a women name Mary L Johnson, Born in Green Wood Mississippi and A man name Carl Kenwood Jones born in the Bronx. Precious had her first baby at the age 12, and her second one by the age of 16, both by her farther Carl. Her mother blames her for her father “having sex” with her, Mary also despises her daughter for being a “Hot-Trot” and treats her almost less than nothing.
Mary finds any possible way to make her daughters life miserable, horrible insults, physical and sexual abuse, etc. At twelve Precious first baby came out with Down syndrome. This confirmed what she had been told all her life, she was stupid. “Maybe I was stupid, if my baby came out stupid.” This leads Precious to begin to try and find her true identity, hoping that it is something more than her mothers, and something greater than just being uneducated.Instead of being discouraged by her mothers cruel behavior she used her harsh words and turn them into inspiration helping her find her true identity.

As a child being at home was not the only place that Precious searched for her identity. “I really do want to learn. Everyday I tell myself something gonna happen some shit like on TV. I’m gonna break through or somebody gonna break through me im gonna learn to be normal change my seat to the front of the class but again it has not been that day.” Since second grade Precious has had problems in class, learning for her was always more difficult then most kids her age. She would sit in the back of the class room, silently, she never left from her seat from the moment she arrived at school until it was time to leave. The teacher thought she was mentally ill, or embarrassed because she would always pee on herself. Eventually her teacher began to ignore her, when all she needed was special attention. This began to add to Precious feelings about what her true identity was. Instead of giving up on her education she used this memory to push her through when trying to get a better education. Turning this negative thing in her life and using it to find her identity.

At age 16 she was diagnosed with the HIV virus given to her by her father. This is another collision that was keeping Precious from being able to find her purpose in life and who she truly was. Every time she began to take a step forward in life something drastic happen this set her back, making it hard for her to find herself. Yet precious turned this tragedy into something good, using it as a stepping stool to continue to find who she truly was.

Although everything that Precious has been through, the rape, the virus, the physical and sexual abuse, the education disadvantages, she still finds multiple ways to escape what society has made her out to be. Precious enters an alternative school where she meets other troubled girls and, begins to get inspired and cheered on by a devoted teacher, who helps her learn to read and write. In the school she makes friends with a girl named Rita, and a Hispanic girl who witnessed her father murder her mother which leads her to foster care, being raped, and drugs, because of the similar stories Rita becomes one of Precious best friends.

Befriending Rita, allowed her to be swayed into joining a HIV prevention program telling her story to many women in the same situation inspiring her to inspire others similar to her. She finally begins to find her identity from all of the problems she has been faced with. Overcoming her worst problems allowed her to choose her own identity in society.

Honors Civil War Article.

Jasmine Jackson
Did The Civil War affect Modern America?
During mid January 1995 David Westerman, a 19 year old white graduate of a high school in Guthrie, Kentucky was killed by a gunshot to the heart by four young black males. Freddy Morrow, Damien Darden and Tony Andrews, all age 17, and Marcus Merriweather age 15. Westerman had a confederate flag flying on the bed of his truck the day that he was killed, many think this provoked the shooting.
When 15 year old Marcus Merriweather was interviewed he told reporters that “he saw the flag as a symbol of slavery.” Some say the flag on Westerman truck was simply a symbol of the Guthrie High School mascot The Rebels and had no real connection to the Civil war. If this was the case why was Marcs Merriweather an African American male offended by the flag? Why would this symbol be connected to the violent act?
The Confederate flag along with groups formed around the Civil war such as The KKK, are seen as one of the many things connecting to the civil war, which is leading to violent acts carried out in modern America. This brings me to the question did The Civil War truly end in 1865 or was it the beginning of modern America racist violence?
During the American Civil war one of the things the south fought for was being able to have a federalist country, continue slavery, and have complete control over African Americans. The Civil War had a result of 620,000 soldiers dead and an undetermined number of civilian injuries.
Before the Civil war, when African Americans were enslaved they were automatically a victim of violence rather it be from their owners or any other white man or women. Many slaves rebelled against the “superior race” but many were too scared to fight back. Nat Turner a abolitionist killed many whites because they abused slaves. Turner led a group called revolt that helped him kill slave owners for owning and abusing slaves. Turner was one of the few African American slaves that fought against the whites before the civil war.
Since the civil war ended there have been multiple acts of violence over some of the same things that were being fault for in 1865. It seems as if the civil war helped African Americans be able to stand up and “fight” for what they feel is right. Marcus Meriwether felt offended by the symbol that was used against his people during the war, so he did as he was showed in the past and used violence to solve his conflict, Shooting and killing Mr. Westerman. If the civil war had not happen I would see it rather hard for this conflict to even be a problem. Let’s take this situation and place it in the 1830’s before the civil war had begun. Mr. Westerman would have never been shot because he would have had complete control over Marcus Merriweather, Mr. Merriweather wouldn’t have attacked Mr. Westerman because it was something he expected a white male to do, disrespect him. The Civil War taught Marcus that he should stand up for what he feels is right by using violence.

In June of 2007, 72-year-old James Ford Seale was convicted of federal charges of kidnapping and conspiracy for the deaths of Charles Moore and Henry Hezekiah Dee, two 19-year-olds who disappeared from Franklin County in May 1964. Seale was arrested after Charles Marcus Edwards, a confessed Klansman, who received prosecution for his role in the abductions, testified. He said the two boys were beaten, then bound with weights and thrown alive in the Mississippi River. The Klansman suspected the two boys of being involved in civil rights activity in 1964 which was not accepted by whites during this time. James Seale and Charles Edwards were part of a Para military group named the Ku Klux Klan formed after the civil war in 1865.

he Civil War is said to be over but is still being fought invisibly today, whites who feel that the war should have ended differently are still using violent acts to get the enemies(referring to anyone against their ideas) attention, such as Charles Edwards and James Seale abductions and killings. Same goes for African Americans like Marcus Merriweather fighting a war that his ancestors thought was over.

Blog 10:Whats the deal with reconstruction?

What's the deal with Reconstruction?

After the Civil war the north was trying to reconstruct the south and make it part of the union again. But the South rebelled against it because they didn't want to be part of the union again.

What is/was Reconstruction? What went well? What went poorly?

The president at the time which was Andrew Johnson, sent democrats to the south to help it be retrained as a uion after the Civil war. The problem with this is that the people he sent were federlist, who didnt truley believe in the changes and rules they were suppose to be enforceing. This leading to the whole point of them being there pointless.

Why is it relevant today?

This was the begining where most of our problems that we are facing today dealing with conflicts and rascisum in the south can connect back to. I see it as the concrete of inequality being set in, since the reconstruction period the civil war just continued in a more invisable way.

Connect the basic history of Reconstruction with a modern issue, as found (and cited and excerpted from a modern news story)

Rep. Joe Wilson shocked many observers Wednesday night when he shouted, "You lie!" after the president denied that health care legislation would provide free coverage for illegal immigrants.

Media Saves The Beach Blog 9.

Post an excerpt from an interesting and relevant news story that connects to coastal issues, making sure to include a link to the original story. What is the issue and/or controversy? Where can one get more information? In what way(s) does the story relate to our class? How might it tie in to our work for Media Saves the Beach?

News Article
"The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health has closed a section of Ocean Beach due to a sewage spill.
Environmental Health Department officials closed Dog Beach in OB because of a nearly 15,000-gallon sewage spill."
(to continue click here http://www.kpbs.org/news/2009/jun/29/sewage-spill-closes-dog-beach/)

Issue with this article is the sewage spill caused the beach to be shut down, or at lease dangerous for anyone to swim in. This is a problem leading into other problems because it is hard for people to be aware of the harmful things spilt in the ocean if they do not check the news and updates on the beaches before they go.
This relates to What were doing in humanities cause we can help solve some of these problems with getting the word out and letting people know what is going on and how and why it is not safe to be in the water in a more effective and efficient way.

Media Saves The Beach Blog # 8

What ideas do you have for Media Saves the Beach?
I would like to focus my project on mission beach because that is the most recent beach that My family and friends and I all like to go to. So i would like to find more out about what is in the water and what is hurtful so that we can enjoy going to the beach without any worries.

What content interests you?/ What projects might you create?
I'm More interested in either the Photography or Video.
I was also thinking like a Artwork intertwined with Photos. Because I'm not that good at actually drawling things but photography is something I like and mixing the both of them could be something different and also fun.

Final American Icon Project.

Bibliography:
Angelou, Maya.. And Still I Rise..... New York: New York, Ny, U.S.A.: Random House, Incorporated, 1978. "Maya Angelou - The Official Website." Maya Angelou - The Official Website. 4 Sep. 2009 .

Final Draft:
It was during my middle school year when I was first inspired by the words of Dr. Maya Angelou. Earlier that day a fight between me and another student broke out during my P.E period. While I was waiting in the front office for my suspension papers, my 3rd period English teacher walked in with lunch and a paper in his hand. On the paper was a poem written by a woman name Maya Angelou called Still I Rise. “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies; you may trod me in the very dirt. But still, like dust, I'll rise.”
During this point of my life I was a troubled teen in need of advice and guidance. Words didn’t seem to solve my problems as easy as fighting and violence in result of this my fist became my voice. It seemed as if no one would listen or care about what I had to say; because of this I began to be mean, hateful and unable to express my emotions through words. At the age of 8 Maya Angelou was raped by a man named Freeman. She was forced to keep quiet about the incident or she would be significantly penalized if not. Unfortunately, Maya was a witness during Mr. Freeman’s trail; He was sentenced to death and left Maya with a great burden to deal with. She remained silent for the next five years of her life only speaking to her older brother, Bailey."I thought if I spoke, my mouth would just issue out something that would kill people, randomly, so it was better not to talk." Maya and I had this in common all though I didn’t silence myself for 5 years, I limited my self from speaking what was on my mind and heart making the words that I spoke as slient as Maya’s words.

The poem, Still I Rise, was written during the outcome of the hardest part of Maya Angelou’s life. "There is a kind of strength that is almost frightening in black women. It's as if a steel rod runs right through the head down to the feet." Her inspiring words and wisdom is what makes the connection between Maya and I. She doesn’t only write her stories as a way of expressing herself but also as a way for other young black women growing up in the same society that has gave her so many obstacles to over come. “I rather my readers learn from my mistakes rather then learn from there own.” Reading through Maya’s autobiographies has showed me different pathways that would be better for me to steer myself away from, But yet taught me that the most tragic events that happen in your life are the best events to use for inspiration.

Since reading Maya Angelou’s poetry, autobiographies, and watching her media productions it has lead me in a pathway to start my own. She has showed me that it is okay to open my mouth and speak out rather than result to the harshness of violence. “Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean.” She has also showed me that great things can come from a harmful past, and there is multiply ways to express you other than violence that will still get the message across. I have written several poems of my own, and I am also interested in film production. Maya has also showed me that the best success in life is self success and that can only be reached by hard work and patience. “All great achievements require time.”

Bog #6: American Icons Reflection part 1

Answer each of the following... Be sure to have a copy of each of your drafts with you.

1. What did you discover about your writing during this project?
One thing I noticed while doing this project is that i use a lot of "ing" words when I am trying to tell a story. Since we did this project and Randy showed us new techniques I have learned a way to change "ing" words in to a activating verb. This made my writing flow a little better. My writing is also not as structhered as i would like it to be, i didnt really over come this delemia but this project helped it not be as bad as it was.

2. Identify and describe (at least) one specific writing technique that you used. How did you use it? What effect did it have on your writing?
I tried using the Loop when writing my Artistic Statement, Started my statement off with a scene that was from the nowish past which was 8th grade, next I took my audience deeper into the message i was trying to portrey, My connection with Maya Angelou. Last i finished my statement with a quote that relates to the beginning connecting my intro with my outro. This improved my paper and also made it more focused and not so all over the place.

3. If you had time for one more draft, what would you do?
I would go over my draft with someone in the class that considers themselfs as a good writer, so that they could help me turn my paragraphs into storys without taking out the needed information because that was a problem in my 2nd draft.

4. Copy one sentence that you believe is well-written and/or important to your overall piece. What makes it stand out to you?

You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies; you may trod me in the very dirt. But still, like dust, I'll rise.” This quote along with many others has inspired the direction my life is going in.

I choose this line because it was the last sentence in my intro. To me the last line in a first paragraph in a paper is very important its like the last chance the author has to grasp the readers attention

Photograph Techniques

Unique perspectives is when you turn your camera angle a certen way so that you capture a object but still get background info, it also is sort of a unique and unfimilar posed angle like seen in the above photo.
Posed portraits is when you specifically pose the object to how you would like. My picture is more of a portrait so this would be a good technique for me to use to make my picture look more professional.

Back Lighting is where you bring out most of the light in the back of your photo this gives your image in the front a sort of dark shadow and gives the picture more to look at. It also makes it more creative and eye pleasing.

Artistic Statements and Critiques.

Feedback:
-"To me the 2nd and 3rd paragraph got a little dull but if you changed it into more of a story it would be an amazing piece."
-"The story is well through out , the only real issue in the punctuation(which is normal for a first draft)."
-"I might try and find lines from other poems she has done and that will make the piece that much better."

These are direct quotes that i was given during the critiquing period in class. My partners advice was to the point clear and also very helpful. He told me a pretty neat trick to keep in mind when making sure my paper flows correctly. He also gave me some clues to making my 2nd and third paragraphs more interesting like the first one. Overall my first critiquing draft went well.

New ideas.
-To add more details into my beginning to make it more interesting and mind grabbing.
-Make another connection between my american icon so that I can have a clear continum of american icons.
-Write it more as a story rather than giving facts, it will leave the reader with a better chance of remembering what they read after there finished.

American Icon ideas.

Maya Angelou.
Possible Resources:

Website:http://mayaangelou.com/
Her website has all of her books a biography of her life, quotes from her and also information about her past and what she plans to do in the future. This is her Official Website so everything here is a reliable source to use when writing my paper.

Books: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
This is a very important autobiography on Maya Angelou's life. Through the book she tells us a story of her past. This book will help me relate me and Maya Angelou in a more factual way providing evidence making the connection more personal.

Films/Media: I know why a Cage Bird Sings, Poetic Justice, Down in the Delta, The Black candle.
Maya Angelou has Four different films with her involvement in them. There are 2 movies made from her autobiographies and 2 movies directed and narrated by her. This further proves my point of the level of success she has reached and how she continues to inspire me.
Films are easy to get a hold of and can be very informational.

Oprah.
Possible Resources:

Website: www.Oprahwinfrey.com
On her website there is information about the different funds and programs she has organized. If I decide to connect her giving spirit through her foundations this would be a helpful site for resources.

Books:
She has Up close: Oprah Winfrey by Ilene Cooper,Oprah Winfrey I don't believe in Failure by Robin Westen, and also The Oprah Phenomenon by Jennifer Harris and many more.

Any one of these books would be good for me to use information out of them. they are all biographies, meaning the have important facts about Oprah's life and personal experiences that i could link back to myself and connection with her.

6. Interviews/Podcast:
Oprah has her own talk show on television where i could use specific quotes and information off of. This would be a good resource because it is a more reliable resources since it is coming from her mouth herself.
another good resource would be interviews that she has done, there are tons of them on you tube and also on the Internet to look up and get information from that would help with the facts about Oprah's life.

American Icons.

Maya Angelou is a writer, activist, civil activist, a play directer and much more, she has written over 6 books, & have directed and written more than 8 poems and over 7 autobiography's.She grew up during the 1920'. Being black and a woman she has experienced many devastating and tragic events that could have set her back. Instead of giving up on the world she decided to change it, she began writing books about her life and the problems that she faced, and also problems that many African American woman will encounter at lease once in there life.I would like to do her for my American icon because we could have a lot in common and a lot that I can relate to. She has inspired me through her films and also her poetry when i was younger i would express myself through poems and writing and they came out being something that I was proud of. Doing her for my project

Oprah Winfrey is a television producer, actress, author, magazine publisher and also runs a multi-award winning talk show. Life hasn't been easy for Oprah she grew up in Poverty in the backwoods of Mississippi. She was raped at age 9 and pregnant by age 14. Like Maya Angelou Oprah was destine to succeed. No matter what problems she faced, she over came with something greater. She was a 2.7 billionaire by her late 30's. Oprah has spread her success in all different parts of the world. Africa helping supply food and medicine, New Orleans rebuilding and replacing homes, and also setting up different funding for the homeless, for kids without parents and also for schools and recreational centers. Oprah and I aren't that much different from one another, We carry alot of the same Characteristics, and as a young black woman growing up in today's society its nice to have someone to look up to. Oprah doesn't hold back she asks what she would like to do and does what she puts her mind to. This is why i choose her for my American Icon.

"You can't just sit there and wait for people to give you that golden dream. You've got to get out there and make it happen for yourself." Diana Ross a inspiration to all woman and talented singers coming up in the music business. Diana Ross was one of the most successful female artist, crossing over into film, television and Broadway during the 1970s and through the mid 1980s. She believed that if you worked hard enough and long enough for something you could get whatever it is that you desired. She also believed that a tough past was a way to have a bright future. Growing up black and a singer in her tine frame wasn't easy but she didn't let anything stop her, She wanted it all to singer act and also be in Broadway productions.Diana was one of the first female recording artist to switch over in all three categories. She has inspired all of my greatest Artist from Beyonce', Alica Keys. Keyshia Cole and also Mary J. Bilge. I would like to do my American Icon project on her because she has accomplished many different things that have impacted the world big and small.

Back to School

In humanities this year I would like to push and also challenge myself. I would do this by always putting forth my best effort. Another goal I would like to set is getting better at working with teams, and also being able to be open minded to different ideas and things, Sometimes when I see and here things that I am unfamiliar with I sometimes shut out if I am not interested. By the end of the school year I would like to be able to work well with people who have different political views, religion beliefs different looks and ideas.

Academically I would like to learn more about world history interesting events that have happen in history that has impacted the world, but is something that not all the world talks about. Because I would be more intrested in learning about it.
